What is a carbon laser facial?

A carbon laser facial is "a revolutionary, non-invasive, painless, with virtually no-downtime, procedure that helps rejuvenate the appearance of ageing and damaged skin. It gently removes the top layer of skin, leaving an amazing glow with a vibrant, youthful complexion," Dr OBT, aesthetic doctor and founder of Halcyon Aesthetics, explains.

"Also known as a China Doll Laser Facial, Hollywood Peel, Black Doll Laser Facial or Charcoal Black Doll Facial, this gentle procedure is safe on all skin types. It is a great way to get a quick skin refresher without the longer downtime associated with other laser procedures. It evens skin tone, reducing appearance of pigment, fine lines, and acne scars.

"Not only is it for acne and hyperpigmentation but for overall skin rejuvenation as well!"

How much does a carbon laser facial cost?

It depends where you go and what type of procedure you decide on, but you're looking to pay anywhere from £70 to £250.

How do carbon laser facials work?

Dr OBT, who has six years of specialist training in plastic, reconstructive and burn surgery, breaks it down for us, explaining, "The carbon facial is a two-stage process. Before the treatment begins, we would double cleanse the skin. A layer of liquid carbon is then applied to the skin, where it penetrates deep into the pores. As the carbon dries, it attaches itself to dirt, oil or dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.

"Once dried, the carbon is ready to meet our laser. The entire treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, afterwards you should see an instant brightening of the skin, which will also feel smoother and softer than ever before. The results will continue to progress throughout your course of treatments.''

What are the benefits of a carbon laser facial?

The carbon facial laser skin rejuvenation treatment is especially effective for the treatment of the following skin imperfections:

• Enlarged pores

• Acne and acne scars

• Pigmentation and hyperpigmentation

• Dull skin

• Blocked pores

• Fine lines and wrinkles

Carbon laser facials deeply exfoliate the skin, leaving you with a smoother, brighter complexion. They also stimulate collagen production which will give your face a plump, youthful look.

Are there any side effects from a carbon laser facial?

''The Carbon Laser Facial is a completely safe skin treatment, with no reports of major skin complications or painful side effects. Post-treatment, you may notice some slight redness, and experience some tingling, but this will both subside post-treatment. No downtime is required, and you will be able to resume daily activities straight away.''

Finally, Dr OBT, gives his thoughts on why he loves this treatment so much, adding, "The Carbon Laser Facial is the perfect lunchtime treatment, its very relaxing too. If you have acne or acne hyperpigmentation that bothers you the carbon facial is a great, non-invasive, no-downtime option to try."

Should I get a carbon laser facial or a chemical peel?

A chemical peel will provide similar results and target the same skin concerns as a carbon laser facial but there are major differences between the two. Firstly, carbon laser facials use heat rather than chemicals. This means they require no downtime. If you have sensitive skin or a skin condition like eczema, you're less likely to experience irritation and redness from a carbon laser facial too.
