Rylan Clark-Neal really is the classic story of a boy made good. From the wailing hopeful on The X Factor back in 2012, to the winner of Celebrity Big Brother and presenter of countless hit TV shows, Rylan has found his place in the nation’s hearts. But it seems not everything in his life is as perfect as it seems, as last week it was revealed that the 32 year old had split from his husband of six years, Dan Neal.

Before news of the split broke fans of Rylan – who had been quiet recently on social media after pulling out of hosting Eurovision in May and taking a break from his Radio 2 show – had been concerned for the star’s welfare, while Dan is understood to have now moved out of the couple’s home and into a rented flat in Essex.

Last week, Rylan released a moving statement, in which he said, “Following reports about Dan and I spending time apart, I feel I have to speak out, as the way it is being reported is unfair. I have made a number of mistakes, which I deeply regret and [which] have inevitably led to the breakdown of our marriage.”

Rylan continued, “I have taken time away from work as I am not in a good place at the moment and am seeking help. I am trying to take each day at a time and would like to [say] thank you to everyone for their support and for respecting our privacy at this time.”

He also posted on his Instagram, saying, “We are currently prioritising our mental health and looking after the ones around us we love the most. I am working towards getting back to the jobs I love in due course. Thank you for being patient with me.”

The couple met after former police officer Dan appeared as a contestant on Big Brother in 2013 and Rylan interviewed him on spin-off show Big Brother’s Little Brother. The pair married in 2015 at a private but star-studded ceremony, with guests including Matt and Emma Willis, Steps’ Claire Richards, and close friend Katie Price.

Dan, 41, has a son, 21-year-old Cameron, who Rylan would occasionally speak about, most recently to congratulate him getting into drama school.

“Well I’m a proud one tonight,” he posted on Instagram alongside a picture of himself with his stepson. “Our boy has been accepted to LAMDA!!! Completely overjoyed and so proud, well done.”

Rylan had also previously spoken about his relationship with Cameron, joking in an interview a couple of years ago that he’d become a real “dad” to him. “I’ve turned into a proper dad and I even tell him off,” he said. “He’s got three parking tickets in the last week so I’ve been screaming at him down the phone.”

And while his relationship with his stepson was clearly nothing but positive, he also admitted in the past that he wanted to have his own kids. “I’m already a stepdad but, of course, I’d like to have kids. Since day one I’ve always wanted kids. I love babies. It is definitely something that we will talk about and discuss if, how, when and why. It’s doable. It’s always on the table, it’s just when the time is right. If I did have a baby, I’d be the sort to want a year off just to be a dad. There’s a lot that I’ve got to look at.”
