Is there anything more painful or cringey than that final meet up with the person you’ve just broken up with? In the real world, it involves a few tears, an awkward hug and handing back the T-shirt of theirs you sleep in, hoping they realise the right thing to say is: ‘it’s ok - you keep it.’

In Love Island world it involves continuing to live in the same house for at least a few more days and a final date on a luxurious boat - for Jake Cornish and Liberty Poole anyway.

The pair, who split up last night ‘mutually’ – although it very much sounded to us like Liberty initiated it – see if there’s any spark left on tonight’s episode. We watch them drift out to sea – an apt metaphor, perhaps, for the state of their relationship by the end.

When they get the text in the villa telling them about the date, they ponder whether to go, with Jake saying, "I think it would be silly not to go on a date. It’s entirely up to you."

They realise they’ve got nothing to lose (well, except £50k) and head out.

Jake says, "Here we are then. Our perfect date we’ve always spoken about. You look beautiful today," to which Liberty says, "Thank you," and asks how Jake feels.

Jake says it’s a tricky one, adding, "I didn’t think I’d be coming on a date with the one I thought was the one." A sentence as baffling written down as it must have been for Liberty to hear.

"On my behalf I felt the affection died out. That’s a big thing for me and that’s nothing against you as a person," he goes on.
