Chunky ’90s highlights are back and going nowhere fast

Here's how to recreate the look 🔥

Chunky blonde highlights

by Aimee Jakes |

From scrunchies to slip dresses and brown lippie, we fully ship a '90s comeback.

The latest past time to dominate our Insta feeds is chunky, face-framing highlights which have been worn by pretty much the whole of Celebsville, including Kylie Jenner, Beyonce and Dua Lipa.

There are only two rules: 1) the chunkier the better and 2) any colour goes.

This trend is easy, versatile and has come a long way from the peroxide streaks we used to wear in year nine that would always be the wrong side of orange.

Shudders.

The appeal of thiccc highlights? They update your look in a flash, with far less damage than the standard half-head . You can even DIY with a good ol' bleaching kit from Amazon.

We asked celebrity hair stylist Michael Douglas for his tips on styling the chunky highlights trend and what to ask your hairdresser, when achieving the look.

"The trick was not to have highlights, but to ask for ‘slices’." he tells heat.

"Normally, when you have highlights, the section of hair is weaved, resulting in little strands of the section lightened. But, for the '90s look, we colour the whole slice (not weave it) - this gives a great effect, and gives a strong colour to the hair. The other key trick was not to go too light – go for honey and peanut-type shades."

He also recommends getting "a medium, classic layered hair cut like Rachel from Friends had (circa ‘98). These layers mean you can load body into the hair, while keeping the length."

We're more than ready to relive 'The Rachel' haircut, tbh.

But how do you keep your hair in tip-top health, you ask?

"After it has been bleached, hair is weakened, so it needs strength and it needs it weekly. OGX Damage Remedy Coconut Miracle Oil Hair Mask is the most intensive hair treatment in the range, and used regularly will have a huge beneficial impact on how your bleached hair looks and feels.

"Additionally, try to reduce heat styling too. Even but 30% will make a big difference. You can create shiny, smooth styling without the heat with OGX’s Flexible Hold Frizz Defying + Coconut Miracle Oil Air Dry Cream."

Recently, we tested OGX’s Flexible Hold Frizz Defying + Coconut Miracle Oil Air Dry Cream and confirmed it's the ULTIMATE air dry cream, meaning you can ditch the hairdryer for good.

Summer is just absolutely NOT the time any of us want to be firing up the hairdryer.

Extra heat is not welcome, but without a hairdryer it's incredibly difficult to achieve frizz-free locks, especially if you've got curly hair.
