As long as I can remember, I've always had a love-and-hate relationship with my hair. With wavy hair types more prone to dryness, humidity and frizziness, I thought I'd try and test the famous Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray. After all, the spray claims to be an award-winning, humidity-blocking and anti-frizz formula, so perfect for targeting my haircare concerns. But, was it too good to be true? Read on to hear my honest thoughts...
Color Wow's haircare range has amassed thousands of reviews across a variety of sites, and the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray has pulled in over 82,000 reviews on Amazon. It's the number one bestselling product in the hair sprays category, with fans of the product dubbing it 'magic in a bottle'. Kim Kardashian's own hairstylist, Chris Appleton, is also a fan of the renowned spray, commenting 'Dream Coat literally changes the texture of the hair... honestly, it's pretty wow'.
'Pretty wow', indeed. The formula not only makes your hair look incredibly sleek, shiny and frizz-free, but the spray also doubles up as a heat protectant and is formulated with paraben-free, sulphate-free and cruelty-free ingredients. A bottle of the dreamy spray sells every six seconds, so its acclaim really speaks for itself here. It supposedly has a super lightweight and non-greasy finish, with results lasting for up to four washes.
Having attended many a different hair salon, I've always wondered how they've managed to get my frizzy hair so ridiculously shiny. So, I always try and keep my eyes peeled to see what products they use. At one appointment, I noticed them using a bottle of the Dream Coat spray, and that's how I knew that it was a force to be reckoned with. Plus, the thousands of glowing reviews didn't go amiss, either.
Of course, after hearing so much about the spray we thought we'd put it to the test, alongside the Color Wow Security Shampoo. Here's what I thought about the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray...

My honest thoughts
As stated earlier, I struggle a lot with frizzy hair given that my hair is naturally wavy - and I've never known how to tame it. I've always found that despite smoothing my hair, styling serums leave my hair feeling too greasy. And, the straighteners never seem to keep my hair sleek, no matter what I do. That's why Dream Coat has become my ultimate hair saviour.
The formula is lightweight, invisible, and makes your hair feel soft and weightless. The effects are fairly long-lasting and will honestly save you from any future bad hair days, like, ever. You just spray it onto freshly washed, towel-dried hair, blow dry it with your favourite hairdryer and watch the magic happen.
I tested the product before going out on a night out, styled my hair to perfection and then was horrified to be caught in a downpour before even making it to the pub. Despite this though, where usually my whole night would be ruined, my hair actually maintained its composure. It was nothing short of a miracle.
I went from pub to bar to club, elbowing my way through sweaty crowds and humid rooms, and not once did my hair falter. And, when, eventually the night ended (at 6am, mind you) my hair was still in very good frizz-free condition, where usually I would have looked like a hot mess. I can't tell you how confident I felt when they turned on the lights at last orders, and how often does that happen? Literally never.
Just for some context, this is my hair when I use Only Curls hair products, so you can see the difference between my natural texture (which I've grown to love!) and when I use Dream Coat. Yes, I'm aware I look like a total shapeshifter - which is one of the perks of having wavy hair, tbh.
Sometimes, though, you just want to switch it up and go for a super sleek look. And if you do, then I can honestly say that the Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is where it's at. I'm in love.
What we loved
There's so much to love about the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray, and the obvious thing is just how good it makes your hair look. Glassy, shiny hair? Check. A reduction in frizz? Check. Holds steady with humidity? Check. A total triple threat.
• Healthy-looking, shiny and sleek hair: After using Dream Coat on my hair, I could almost get away with looking like I'd had it professionally done at a salon. I absolutely loved the effect that it had, which I've lovingly dubbed the 'princess hair effect'. A bit like the Princess Diaries makeover scene.
• A reduction in frizz: I can confidently say that it reduced the amount of frizz in my hair. The top layer of my hair still had the slightest amount of fluffiness but I'll keep this in mind for when I apply next time as I might have needed to apply more product to that area.
• Long-lasting anti-humidity power: Applying the product before going out for a night out was the best idea ever, in all honesty. Despite spending the night in packed, sweaty bars, (and getting rained on), my hair was in pretty good nick when the night eventually came to an end. Kudos, Color Wow.
What could be better
We took a look at some of the reviews on Amazon to see if there were any pain points with the Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray that we agreed with. Reviewers said, and we agreed, that the following could be room for improvement.
• The pump applicator: Like another reviewer, we experienced an issue with the pump detaching from the packaging on a few occasions, but for us, this was easily pushed back into place meaning that the spray still worked as usual.
• The packaging is a little bit bulky: Not entirely ideal for travelling and a little bit tricky for storage at times, as it can take up a bit of room in your bathroom given it being fairly wide. Travel-sized options are available, however, and the Dream Coat Supernatural Spray, 50ml is available to shop if you want a smaller option.
How the product was tested
I've been testing this product on and off for a few months, and I love it so much that I tend to save it for special occasions when I want to go all-out with hair styling. I'm about halfway through the bottle and I've had it for around six months, so it does go the distance.
After showering, I towel dry my freshly washed hair and spray Dream Coat liberally all over damp hair. Given that it's got added heat protection, I don't have to worry about doubling up with a heat-protectant spray either. Absolutely genius.
There are some things to be mindful of here. I tested it alongside the Color Wow Color Security Shampoo and again with a different brand of shampoo, and genuinely found that the spray performed better after using the Color Wow shampoo - although I'm not sure exactly why.
The second thing to be mindful of is that the Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray is a heat-activated formula. Therefore, after using it, don't leave your hair to air dry - blowdrying is key here, and it really enhances the smooth, shiny effect.
My hairdryer of choice? I used the Revlon One-Step for shape, volume and bounce. I have layers, so I love adding some dimension with the two-in-one hairdryer and styling tool. All-in-all, would I say Dream Coat is a must-have purchase? For me, yes. And I will, without a doubt, be repurchasing it as soon as I run out.
I appreciate that there are a variety of hair types who may have differing levels of success with this product. Customers with wavy hair like mine have also praised Dream Coat, saying it's a brilliant product for taming frizz. However, reviewers with hair types different to mine have also had a lot of great things to say about the styling spray - just check out the reviews.
FAQs
Does Color Wow Dream Coat work?
Yes, absolutely. We found that the Color Wow Dream Coat spray helped to reduce frizz, worked in humid conditions and made the hair look and feel sleek, shiny and healthy. The one thing we could note is that, despite saying it lasts for up to four washes after shampooing, we found that the effects haven't lasted as long as that for us. However, we can confidently say it works in other regards.
Is Color Wow Dream Coat worth it?
At £21.95, it is an investment, and slightly more expensive than competitor products. However, as stated earlier, I last bought the Dream Coat spray in June and it's still going strong, so we'd say it is definitely worth the purchase. Plus, it's currently on offer with 26% off on Amazon right now. Payday treat, anyone?
If you tend to air dry your hair then it might not necessarily be worth the buy, as the formula is heat-activated and needs blowdrying to work. But, if you find yourself using the hairdryer a lot, or like the look of sleek, straight hair on the daily, we'd recommend it.
Are Color Wow products good?
Yes! Including the Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray, we can also vouch for the Color Wow Color Security Shampoo, especially when used in tandem. Color Wow specialises in award-winning haircare, formulated by founder, Gail Federici and biochemist, Dr. Joseph Cincotta with science-backed ingredients. There must be a reason Color Wow has thousands of positive reviews, right?
What is Color Wow Dream Coat used for?
Color Wow Dream Coat is a styling spray used by celebrity stylists, hairdressers and regular hair product enthusiasts alike. The spray is used to create longer-lasting, sleeker hair, preventing any humidity and frizziness. It can be used across most hair types, wielding impressive results.
How long does Color Wow Dream Coat last?
The effects of Dream Coat are said to last through three to four shampoos. Upon testing, the results haven't lasted as long as that for me. It's been two days since I applied Dream Coat and I am beginning to see signs of frizziness returning, however, the short-lived effects are still phenomenal.
Where can I buy Color Wow Dream Coat?
You can shop Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray just about anywhere. At Amazon, LookFantastic, Cult Beauty, Space NK, Selfridges, Sephora and more. However, we'd recommend snapping it up at Amazon where it's currently on offer...
