Gogglebox families

Gogglebox is easily one of the best shows on the planet and its secret sauce is the hilarious sofa critics who add very important insight, lols and sometimes tears whilst watching popular telly shows each week.

There have been many line-up changes over the years and some of the cast have gone on to become household names (Scarlett Moffatt, cough).

Here's a trip down memory lane and revisit some of our favourite Gogglebox families, including the ones you definitely forgot about...

The Moffatt family

The Moffatt family left the show after appearing on telly for two years in 2016. The family consisted of mum Betty, dad Mark, and eventually Scarlett’s younger sister Ava.

Scarlett was the breakout star of the family, and stopped appearing on our favourite TV-watching show after she signed up to compete on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here!

Since then, Scarlett has made other TV appearances including being a presenter on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and hosting a radio show on Capital North East.

The rest of the family did return to TV in 2019 for a controversial programme called The British Tribe Next Door. It saw them live alongside the Himba tribe in Namibia.

Announcing the programme, Scarlett wrote, "OMG I don’t even know how to put this into words but basically THE GOGGLEBOX MOFFATTS ARE BACK!

"I can finally talk about this life-changing experience & how THE BRITISH TRIBE NEXT DOOR IS COMING TO CHANNEL 4 VERY VERY SOON!! We took our house, our whole house and moved in with an amazing Himba tribe in Namibia. I can’t tell you how many laughs I had, how many I cried & how much I learnt not just about my new friends but myself and my family."

Mica and Marcus

We were gutted when Mica and Marcus announced that they were leaving the show. They’ve had us in stitches since their show debut in 2017. We miss them!

In a statement, they explained why they were leaving the show saying,  “We've had so much fun with you all tuning in at home and the hardworking Gogglebox crew but it's time to put down the remote and see what else God has in store for us.”

The couple has continued to appear on our telly since they left Gogglebox. They have been filming a new BBC show, which we know is a game show but not much else, but we’re still obsessed.

On Instagram, Marcus said, "So guys we are going on a game show - but we are feeling extremely dunce in here right now.”

The pair are going on the show to raise money for African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust Charity (ACLT).

The Baggs family

The Baggs family consisted of dad Terry, mum Lisa, and brothers Joe and George. They joined the series 2020 and were a hit with viewers. However, they quit the show after just three years in late 2022.

The family announced their departure on Joe’s Instagram saying, “After 3 incredible seasons on Channel 4’s Gogglebox we have taken the decision to leave the show.

“We have loved every second of being part of the Gogglebox family and it’s truly been the opportunity of a lifetime.

“With lots of exciting opportunities approaching us all, we just couldn’t commit to filming another series, but are so grateful for the opportunity.”

They continued by thanking their fans for their support. “Thank you for all your support whilst we have been on the show and over on TikTok. We hope that you’re as excited as we are for what’s coming next!”

Since then, the brothers have started a successful podcast called Not My Bagg, where they have interviewed people including TOWIE’s Gemma Collins and Spice Girl Mel C.

Steph and Dom Parker

Steph and Dom were a pair of OG Goggleboxers. The couple, who’ve been married for over 20 years, were known for their hilarious (and often booze-filled) commentary on current events.

They were on the show between 2013 and 2016. They quit the show to pursue other career ventures.

At the time, Steph said, “You can have too much of a good thing, so you can’t overdo it, we just felt it was time.

“We’ve got other projects and not a lot of time.”

They have appeared on TV quite a bit since their departure, had their own radio show on talkRADIO for 18 months, and even published a book in 2015 to share their wisdom and things that they had learned with their fans.

They also, of course, owned The Salutation. However, the hotel went into liquidation in 2021.

Dom confirmed in a closing statement, “We are sorry to confirm that The Salutation Hotel Ltd, which has been managing The Salutation, has indeed become insolvent.”

The Gilbey family

The Gilbey family was comprised of Tom and his parents Lynne and Tom.

The family had a rocky time on the show as they were dropped in 2014 after it was announced that Tom had decided to appear on Big Brother. After he left the Big Brother house, the family came back to our screens but were axed again after Tom got into some legal trouble.

Tom became a dad a few years later after meeting his girlfriend Gemma at Ascot in 2015. However, it wasn’t plain sailing from there.

Tom was arrested in 2018 after allegedly attacking his girlfriend and causing damage to their home. George left the show that year, but his parents continued to be on our screens until 2020.

Leon and June Bernicoff

Leon and June were the first couples to appear on the show in 2013 and we loved them. They were too cute!

The pair made their departure in 2017 after Leon passed away that year, and though June said that she was said to be leaving, she said that it had been a “great adventure”.

June wrote a book about her life with Leon, which was released in 2018 called Leon and June: Our Story: Life, Love, and Laughter.

Unfortunately, June passed away in 2020. Gogglebox’s executive producer, Tania Alexander, released a statement saying,  "We are deeply saddened to announce that Gogglebox's much-loved June Bernicoff passed away at the age of 82 on May 5 at home with her family by her side after a short illness.

"As the first couple to be cast for Gogglebox back in 2013, June and her husband Leon were a huge part of the programme's success. Their warmth, wit and contrasting personalities endeared them to the nation during the course of the first 10 series.”

It continued, "Following Leon's passing in December 2017, June wrote her first book, Leon And June: Our Story, which was a deeply moving and entertaining chronicle of their 60-year love affair."

"A remarkably independent, principled woman with a vivacious sense of humour and a huge passion for life, June will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew. Despite her departure from the show in 2017, she remained a passionate supporter of the programme, watching it every week, and she was in regular contact with the production team.

"Our thoughts are with June's family – Helen and Ian, Julie and Marc, and her beloved grandchildren Frances, Sam and Faye. The family would like to ask for privacy at this sad time but would like to thank the hospice staff that supported them and cared for June so wonderfully and with such compassion in her final weeks."

The Michael family

The Michael family were part of the OG cast appearing on the show in 2013. The family featured dad Andrew, mum Carolyne, and their daughter Alex and son Louis.

They left the show in 2014 due to Andrew running for UKIP in that years general election but returned shortly after he lost.

They left again in 2018 after Andrew passed away aged 61.

A statement said, "Andy passed away last weekend with his family by his side.

"Retired hotelier Andy, who brought much wit and insight to Gogglebox, was one of the show's original cast members, appearing in the very first episode in 2013.

"Beloved father to Katy, Alex, Pascal and Louis, and cherished husband of Carolyne, Andy was a much-loved and respected member of the Gogglebox family, and he will be very sadly missed.

"Our love and thoughts are with Carolyne and the entire family.

"The family have asked for privacy at this very sad time".

Mary and Marina

The two old ladies were hilarious and perhaps our favourite double act from the show, ever? They always had us in stitches with their takes on current affairs and we were sad when they left.

The besties joined the show in 2016 and were on our screens for five years before Mary, 92, passed away in August 2021. Thankfully Marina is still with us. We hope she’s well.

Sandi and Sandra

These two, who were best friends, were on the show from the very beginning. They were fan-favourites and used to make us lol all the time.

After three years, Sandi Bogle called it quits and left the show, while Sandra Martin left after five years in 2018.

When a fan asked why Sandra left by a fan, she said, "Try sitting on your sofa for 5 years straight. I've done my bit. I just love repeats and Netflix and repeats and ting xxx (I don't want to go back everyone x"

Since leaving the series, Sandi, who is a cousin of model Naomi Campbell, has focused on her music career signing with DeeVu Records and releasing her debut record ‘Cassenova’ in 2016.

Sandra said after leaving the show,  "It was easy in-and-out job. But when I watch them doing the show now, I think ‘boring’. You can’t do any other shows.

"That's why me and Sandi, Scarlett (Moffatt), Steph and Dom all left."
