Indiyah Polack and Dami Hope blessed Love Island viewers with a golden recoupling scene in 2022. While we're confident it requires no reminders, the iconic moment went down after Casa Amor, when Dami opted to couple up with bombshell Summer Botwe and Indiyah brought back Deji Adeniyi from the second villa. After tense words were exchanged between Indiyah and Dami across the fire pit, their back and forth culminated with her famed one-liner, "May the best heartbreaker win."
And when we pulled 25-year-old Indiyah for an exclusive chat, she not only lifted the lid on Love Island's "intense" application process, but delved into what filming those recoupling scenes is really like.
"It does take a while, because for the most part, you're not actually saying anything - you're just standing still so [producers] can get a correct shot and make sure things are edited properly," Indiyah explained.
"But they don't have a say in who you choose for your recoupling speech. You have to think of that speech there and then on the spot, which is why it takes so long. I feel like personally, it takes a bit longer, probably because [producers are] giving you an extra minute to think about what you're going to say."
The reality star and presenter then further detailed how you are simply left thinking about your speech on the spot, with no time to prepare. "It's actually really hard," she admitted.
"I think in a way, it shows how much you like someone because when I used to have to stand up and say why I want to recouple with Dami, I'd be like, 'S**t, what am I gonna say? I don't know why I want to be with him. I really don't know!'
"But you have no choice but to say, and then it all just starts coming out and you're like, 'Oh, is this how I feel!' You get nervous, but it's good to put on the spot I feel sometimes, because that's your true self when it's just coming out and you're not thinking about it."
When we brought up to Indiyah that it's surprising more islanders don't fumble over their speeches, she replied, "It's crazy! It's pretty organic.
"Sometimes, I'd be standing there... If you're last in line to couple up and everyone [has] said their speech, you're like, 'What am I going to say now? You guys have just done a sonnet and you want me to give my speech?' It's funny when you're last in line, you're like, 'Please say something s**t so I don't look bad!'"
