It's a favourite with influencers, but is it actually any good?

Thanks to breakthrough skincare ingredients (hello niacinamide), dewy skinfluencers and spending more time stuck indoors, skincare has never been so popular.

On the whole, it's a great thing. We're championingSPF 50, discovering double cleansing and learning to Not Pick That Spot. However, thanks to the approx 3840382024 skincare products out there, it can be difficult to work out what exactly you should be trying.

Function of Beauty's customisable skincare range is here with a solution. Like its name suggests, it's offering a bespoke service and tailors a cleanser, serum and moisturiser based on your skincare type, needs and wants.

You can choose between a lightly fragranced or fragranced option and they even customise the bottle with your name. Pretty cute, huh.

Function of Beauty is BIG NEWS in the YouTube world, with every influencer seemingly plugging the coloured bottles online. However, we have some questions. Are they actually any good? Is it worth the price tag? Will it transform our quite-frankly TIRED complexion and leave us looking a little more like Gigi Hadid?

We put it to the test...

The Function of Beauty skincare range in full:

Function of Beauty Moisturiser

All products are designed to be used morning and night, are dermatologist-approved and customisable depending on your top three skincare goals (out of 13).

Cleanser : You will be recommended either a jelly or micellar gel formula depending on your skin type and how much make-up you normally wear.

Serum: The formula will be dependant on your 'skin goals' but can include ingredients like salicylic acid for breakouts, azelaic acid for uneven skin tones and peptides to combat anti-ageing.

Moisturiser : You will be recommended either a gel, cream or lotion and like the serum it will be formulated with ingredients depending on your selected skin goals, taking in consideration your skin type.

Function of Beauty skincare - a honest review:

I have oily/combination skin and my main goals were to brighten and hydrate the skin, so after taking the online quiz I was recommended the micellar gel cleanser, serum and lotion moisturiser.

The pros:

Function of Beauty

The main thing I love about the range is how it really is suited to your skin. As someone with oily/combination skin, I can fall into the trap of thicc moisturisers when they can actually be a little too greasy for my skin type (and bad news for my hormonal acne).

The range ensures you have your basics nailed. A cleanser that doesn't strip, yet effectively cleans your skin. A hard-working serum that delivers based on what your skincare concerns are and a fail-safe moisturiser that will plump, soothe and seal.

The serum absorbed very quickly into my skin and quickly gave me that dewy, plumpness I constantly strive for. The moisturiser? Really nourishing and non-greasy. Again, I sometimes feel like I want MORE dew and remind myself 1) my skin doesn't always need it 2) I can always use my trusty Kate Somerville Delikate Recovery Creamif my skin feels particularly dry that day.

I loved how the skincare range helped simplify my routine. It's easy to want to try every product and cream out there, especially as a beauty journalist or someone who counts watching Caroline Hiron's Instagram Lives as a hobby. The range is designed to be used twice a day and unless you want to add a retinol product or AHAs to your routine, this is all you need. Bliss.

It's also important to mention the packaging. The colourful bottles and user-friendly designs mean they sit proudly on my skincare #shelfie. The cleanser dispensed too little product in my opinion and needed a few pumps, but as someone who's accidentally poured half a cleanser down a sink before, I guess FoB has my best interests at heart.

The cons:

Was there anything I didn't like? I wish that I had selected 'lightly fragranced' instead of deciding to shun it completely. Fragrance in skincare is divisive, but as I don't suffer with sensitivity, my skin can handle it. Instead, in a moment of over-caution (I'm a Virgo, can't you tell?) I said NO THANK YOU, SIR and I really regret it.

Applying skincare is a self-care ritual that I look forward to and the absolutely no scent whatsoever means it was way less enjoyable to apply. (Though of course, that is a me problem and not a FoB problem.)

It's also important to note, these products don't contain retinoland won't magically transform problematic skin. But they do provide a solid foundation catered for your skin meaning you can add extra steps if you feel like you need it.

However if your skin is pretty much good, a cleanser, serum and moisturiser is all you need (apart from SPF, always wear SPF! Yes, even in winter.)

All in all, if you're looking for solid, hard-working products that do exactly what you want them to do, Function of Beauty has your back.

Surprising Lockdown 3.0 trends:

Little Moons: the Mochi dessert which is essentially little balls of ice cream wrapped in a sweet rice dough. The flavours are GOOD (think passion fruit to cookie dough) and they're just 69 calories per ball. TikTok is going WILD for them. Try them now and thank us later.

The TikTok tortilla wrap: old us would have attempted a sort of 'rolled up sausage' for our lunchtime wrap, but now it's all about cutting a line to the centre and folding it in quarters. Honestly, our minds are still blown.

Bridgerton: the Netflix series which is a glorious mix between Downton Abbey and Gossip girl has got us all dreaming of summer soirees, Regé-Jean Page and wearing corsets post-lockdown.
